    A systematic review of parent and family functioning in pediatric solid organ transplant populations

    The process of pediatric solid organ transplantation (SOT) places new and increased stressors on patients and family members. Measures of family functioning may predict psychological and health outcomes for pediatric patients and their families, and provide opportunity for targeted intervention. This systematic review investigated parent and family functioning and factors associated with poorer functioning in the pediatric SOT population. Thirty‐seven studies were identified and reviewed. Studies featured a range of organ populations (eg, heart, liver, kidney, lung, intestine) at various stages in the transplant process. Findings highlighted that parents of pediatric SOT populations commonly report increased stress and mental health symptoms, including posttraumatic stress disorder. Pediatric SOT is also associated with increased family stress and burden throughout the transplant process. Measures of parent and family functioning were associated with several important health‐related factors, such as medication adherence, readiness for discharge, and number of hospitalizations.     Psychosocial functioning in pediatric heart transplant recipients and their families

    Across pediatric organ transplant populations, patient and family psychosocial functioning is associated with important health‐related outcomes. Research has suggested that pediatric heart transplant recipients and their families are at increased risk for adverse psychosocial outcomes; however, recent investigation of psychosocial functioning in this population is lacking. This study aimed to provide a contemporary characterization of psychosocial functioning in pediatric heart transplant recipients and their families. Associations between psychosocial function, demographic variables, and transplant‐related variables were investigated. Fifty‐six parents/guardians of pediatric heart transplant recipients completed a comprehensive psychosocial screening measure during transplant follow‐up clinic visits. Descriptive statistics, correlational analyses, and independent samples t tests were performed. Forty percent of pediatric heart transplant recipients and their families endorsed clinically meaningful levels of total psychosocial risk. One‐third of patients presented with clinically significant psychological problems per parent report. Psychosocial risk was unassociated with demographic or transplant‐related factors. Despite notable improvements in the survival of pediatric heart transplant recipients over the past decade, patients and families present with sustained psychosocial risks well beyond the immediate post‐transplant period, necessitating mental health intervention to mitigate adverse impact on health‐related outcomes.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/142422/1/petr13110.pdfhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/142422/2/petr13110_am.pd

    Understanding The Impact of Solver Choice in Model-Based Test Generation

    Background: In model-based test generation, SMT solvers explore the state-space of the model in search of violations of specified properties. If the solver finds that a predicate can be violated, it produces a partial test specification demonstrating the violation.Aims: The choice of solvers is important, as each may produce differing counterexamples. We aim to understand how solver choice impacts the effectiveness of generated test suites at finding faults.Method: We have performed experiments examining the impact of solver choice across multiple dimensions, examining the ability to attain goal satisfaction and fault detection when satisfaction is achieved---varying the source of test goals, data types of model input, and test oracle.Results: The results of our experiment show that solvers vary in their ability to produce counterexamples, and---for models where all solvers achieve goal satisfaction---in the resulting fault detection of the generated test suites. The choice of solver has an impact on the resulting test suite, regardless of the oracle, model structure, or source of testing goals.Conclusions: The results of this study identify factors that impact fault-detection effectiveness, and advice that could improve future approaches to model-based test generation

    Following Prof. Mark Harman of Facebook's keynote and formal presentations (which are recorded in the proceedings) there was a wide ranging discussion at the eighth international Genetic Improvement workshop, GI-2020 @ ICSE (held as part of the 42nd ACM/IEEE International Conference on Software Engineering on Friday 3rd July 2020). Topics included industry take up, human factors, explainabiloity (explainability, justifyability, exploitability) and GI benchmarks. We also contrast various recent online approaches (e.g. SBST 2020) to holding virtual computer science conferences and workshops via the WWW on the Internet without face-2-face interaction. Finally we speculate on how the Coronavirus Covid-19 Pandemic will affect research next year and into the future

    Analyzing the impact of course structure on electronic textbook use in blended introductory physics courses

    We investigate how elements of course structure (i.e., the frequency of assessments as well as the sequencing and weight of course resources) influence the usage patterns of electronic textbooks (e-texts) in introductory physics courses. Specifically, we analyze the access logs of courses at Michigan State University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, each of which deploy e-texts as primary or secondary texts in combination with different formative assessments (e.g., embedded reading questions) and different summative assessment (exam) schedules. As such studies are frequently marred by arguments over what constitutes a “meaningful” interaction with a particular page (usually judged by how long the page remains on the screen), we consider a set of different definitions of “meaningful” interactions. We find that course structure has a strong influence on how much of the e-texts students actually read, and when they do so.     Quantum corrections to the dynamics of interacting bosons: beyond the truncated Wigner approximation

    We develop a consistent perturbation theory in quantum fluctuations around the classical evolution of a system of interacting bosons. The zero order approximation gives the classical Gross-Pitaevskii equations. In the next order we recover the truncated Wigner approximation, where the evolution is still classical but the initial conditions are distributed according to the Wigner transform of the initial density matrix. Further corrections can be characterized as quantum scattering events, which appear in the form of a nonlinear response of the observable to an infinitesimal displacement of the field along its classical evolution. At the end of the paper we give a few numerical examples to test the formalism.Comment: published versio

    Quadruped Gait and Regulation of Apoptotic Factors in Tibiofemoral Joints following Intra-Articular rhPRG4 Injection in \u3cem\u3ePrg4\u3c/em\u3e Null Mice

    Camptodactyly-arthropathy-coxa vara-pericarditis (CACP) syndrome leads to diarthrodial joint arthropathy and is caused by the absence of lubricin (proteoglycan 4—PRG4), a surface-active mucinous glycoprotein responsible for lubricating articular cartilage. In this study, mice lacking the orthologous gene Prg4 served as a model that recapitulates the destructive arthrosis that involves biofouling of cartilage by serum proteins in lieu of Prg4. This study hypothesized that Prg4-deficient mice would demonstrate a quadruped gait change and decreased markers of mitochondrial dyscrasia, following intra-articular injection of both hindlimbs with recombinant human PRG4 (rhPRG4). Prg4−/− (N = 44) mice of both sexes were injected with rhPRG4 and gait alterations were studied at post-injection day 3 and 6, before joints were harvested for immunohistochemistry for caspase-3 activation. Increased stance and propulsion was shown at 3 days post-injection in male mice. There were significantly fewer caspase-3-positive chondrocytes in tibiofemoral cartilage from rhPRG4-injected mice. The mitochondrial gene Mt-tn, and myosin heavy (Myh7) and light chains (Myl2 and Myl3), known to play a cytoskeletal stabilizing role, were significantly upregulated in both sexes (RNA-Seq) following IA rhPRG4. Chondrocyte mitochondrial dyscrasias attributable to the arthrosis in CACP may be mitigated by IA rhPRG4. In a supporting in vitro crystal microbalance experiment, molecular fouling by albumin did not block the surface activity of rhPRG4

    Pediatric Health-Related Quality of Life: Feasibility, Reliability and Validity of the PedsQL™ Transplant Module

    The measurement properties of the newly developed Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory™ (PedsQL™) 3.0 Transplant Module in pediatric solid organ transplant recipients were evaluated. Participants included pediatric recipients of liver, kidney, heart and small bowel transplantation who were cared for at seven medical centers across the United States and their parents. Three hundred and thirty-eight parents of children ages 2–18 and 274 children ages 5–18 completed both the PedsQL™ 4.0 Generic Core Scales and the Transplant Module. Findings suggest that child self-report and parent proxy-report scales on the Transplant Module demonstrated excellent reliability (total scale score for child self-report α= 0.93; total scale score for parent proxy-report α= 0.94). Transplant-specific symptoms or problems were significantly correlated with lower generic HRQOL, supporting construct validity. Children with solid organ transplants and their parents reported statistically significant lower generic HRQOL than healthy children. Parent and child reports showed moderate to good agreement across the scales. In conclusion, the PedsQL™ Transplant Module demonstrated excellent initial feasibility, reliability and construct validity in pediatric patients with solid organ transplants.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/79306/1/j.1600-6143.2010.03149.x.pd
